Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are scientific research studies designed to find better ways to treat or prevent diseases and to determine the safety and efficacy of drugs. Carefully conducted clinical trials are the fastest and safest way to find treatments that work in people and ways to improve health Managing and funding clinical research trials has become more difficult in recent years  Approaches to new strategies and ways to streamline the management through all four phases of the process are increasing.

Focus Areas in this zone include:

  • Biomarkers and the FDA’s Critical Path
  • Global Product and Disease Registries
  • Clinical Trial Designs

Devices and Diagnostics

New device and diagnostic technologies are at the front lines of translating these advances into improvements in medical care and new capabilities in developing “personalized medicine”.  Developing “personalized medicine” can be challenging and costly and one in five BIO attendees wants to meet business partners and companies who understand how to administer medicine in a more efficient matter.

Focus Areas in this zone include:

  • Delivery System Challenges
  • Imaging Science
  • Personalized Medicine
  • Targeted Therapies

Industrial & Environmental

A dozen years after the first approval of a biotech medicine, the first biotechnology-enhanced crop entered the marketplace. Now, as scientists utilize life science technologies to improve manufacturing processes, chemical synthesis and production, a third wave of biotechnology is blossoming, Industrial and Environmental biotechnology. The same genomic and proteomic technologies used to discover new drugs and therapeutics are also changing the way consumer products are being made. These technologies can create new enzyme “biocatalysts,” which are used in the production of raw materials, intermediates and consumer products. The Industrial and Environmental product focus area brings together companies in the various segments of this emerging biotechnology industry, and gives them an expanded presence and attendee focus on the exhibit floor.

Focus areas in this zone include:

  • Biofuels
  • Cellulosic Ethanol
  • Forestry
  • White Biotechnology

BIO Process and Theatre Schedule

Not only will you have a chance to visit with our exhibitors, but attendance is free at the zone’s Process Theater. There, a number of industry experts and exhibitors will present the latest information about developing processes and products — offering you an overview of the changing landscape(s) of this dynamic industry.

The process of development and manufacturing biotherapeutics can be divided into two main operations:  upstream processing and downstream processing.  Regardless of  whether the drug platform is a protein, peptide, hormone, vaccine, Oligonucleotide, gene therapy or cell & tissue therapy, the technology driving this processes include:

  • Bioanalytical Methods & Assay Development
  • Contract Services & Outsourcing
  • Drug Delivery
  • Fermentation & Cell Culture
  • Formulation, Fill & Finish
  • Information Technology
  • Manufacturing
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Separation & Purification
  • Single-Use Technologies
  • Validation & Quality Issues

Products and Services

The Biotechnology industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the world today with global revenues doubling within the past 5 years. There are a wide variety of products and services needed by biotechnology research firms and emerging companies to help establish their labs, work places and keep up with unprecedented growth.

Focus areas in this zone include:

  • Biotechnology focused law firms
  • Facility design and management groups
  • Lab and clean room equipment suppliers
  • Office equipment, supplies and services
  • Logistics providers such as car services
  • Insurance, employee benefits services, and other business support organizations

Therapeutics

Gene therapy is a technique for correcting defective genes responsible for disease development

One of the most amazing genetic applications in medicine is gene therapy. Also known as somatic gene therapy and therapeutic gene therapy, this procedure involves inserting (or sometimes deleting) portions of the genes in diseased patients so that they can be cured and live healthier lives. Attendees at BIO 2006 ranked Therapeutics 2nd overall -- in categories they want to interact more with at the 2007 BIO International Convention.

Focus areas in this zone include:

  • RNA interference
  • Gene silencing
  • Retroviral Vector Based Gene Therapy Products
  • Xenotransplantation Products
