Sustainable Growth of the Life Science Community
Since the late 1990s about 70 start ups (focus red biotechnology) were founded in Austria. Together with universities, research institutes and the big players on site they form a living Life Science community. A number of companies focus on the following priorities:

Business & Regulatory Climate
- Maximum corporate income tax rate: 25%
- Taxation as a group: international groups and foreign companies with Austrian subsidiariescan offset profits and losses of subsidiaries and reduce the basis of assessment to corporate income tax
- Deductions and allowances for investments in R&D and education and training: 25% of R&D expenditure, in exceptional cases 35%
- R&D cash premium: 8% of R&D expenditure for companies without profits
- Education premium: tax credit for occupational training and further education programs
- Favourable tax treatment of subordinated participating loans
- Several federal institution and regional agencies provide customized financing for start-ups and established enterprises. These range from outright grants to soft loans and guarantees for commercial bank loans. Some of these forms of financing are available all year round, others only available during the limited periods of calls for proposals.
